The sight of blooming spring bulbs beckons in the new season, bringing cheer after the winter. Bulbs are a great choice for gardeners as they relatively easy to plant and care for. Divided into hardy and tender classifications, the majority of spring-flowering bulbs are hardy. This means they can safely be left in-ground during the winter months, and in fact, many of these bulbs need this period of cold in order to stimulate growth.

In fall, bulbs can be purchased and planted. Before planting the bulbs, dig in a good amount of compost which will help with drainage and fertilize the area at a rate of 1 teaspoon per square foot. As the bulb produces flowers, remove any seed pods and spent blossoms. After the growing season, the leaves should be allowed to remain, as they collect the energy required for next year’s growth. Because the bulbs are hardy, they can remain in ground. Every few years they can be dug up and divided to maintain plant health.
